Windows 7 cannot install network printer access denied

He hasn't had any issues installing other items though so I don't think that is an issue. I was installing the printer through the Windows Control Panel so didn't have the option to do it explicitly as an administrator. I was logged on as the domain admin so had no additional prompts to re-elevate the credentials. I wasn't able to try the local admin since I ran out of time. I tried a lot of different things over a couple of hours.

I thought to try that but didn't get that far before he needed his laptop back. I'm hoping to get it back tomorrow. That has nothing to do with whether a driver is package aware or not. If you look at the driver under Print Management on the print server, does it show as true or false under the 'Packaged' column?

It is still worth a try to log on as local admin, download the printer driver package. After downloading, right click, select "run as administrator", go through the dialog, type in your password if necessary, and it should install.

Domain users should still have access to use the printer. Same thing happened to me a few months ago and this worked. Without watching what you are doing and just going on your description. I had a similar thing happen to me with 2 windows 7 machines. It was one of the weirdest things ever. I think what I did to get it working was install a different driver entirely and then go into the advanced settings of that new printer and change the existing driver to the one I really wanted.

It appears that this can also be deployed using a GPO in case anyone needs to do it that way…. You are commenting using your WordPress. You are commenting using your Google account. You are commenting using your Twitter account.

Only users with Admin rights would be able to see the printer because the would have access to the drivers. One workaround is to install manually the printer drivers locally, and this will allow any users on the computer to map the device.

Otherwise Microsoft released an article regarding the printer and printer driver management post patching:.

Hi LimitlessTechnology I've tried the workaround from the KB and it did work but since you said 'only users with admin rights would be able to see the printer because they would have access to the drivers' I'm a little confused. Isn't that exactly what we're doing when entering admin credentials in the UAC prompt while trying to install the printer? If that's correct shouldn't we be able to install the drivers without editing the Registry?
