Rue is later killed by the tribute from District 1. He was wounded by Cato in the leg, while he was trying to protect Katniss. When she grabs the bag, she is attacked by another female tribute. She goes back with Peeta and gives him the medicine.

After staying in the cave for days because of the rain, they finally go out in search of food. They realize that Cato killed Thresh, and it is now in search of them. Finally, Katniss shoots Cato in the hand and Peeta throws him to the creatures.

Katniss takes puts out the berries and gives half to Peeta. They both are kept in the Training Center until they recover. Then, Haymitch tells Katniss that she is in danger because of her act of defiance unless she convinces the public that she was so afraid of losing Peeta.

Katniss then explains everything and Peeta feels hurt and destroyed.
